Below is a list of TOP recommended tarot card books for beginner or intermediates. These are great tools to understand the history, symbolism, numerology and astrology widely used in the Rider-Waite tarot deck.
The Ultimate Guide to Tarot (A Beginner’s Guide to the Cards, Spreads, and Revealing the Mystery of the Tarot) by Liz Dean
This book is my all time favourite. Liz Dean explains the symbolism in tarot, numerology and astrology. This is a great book for beginners! She provides a few tarot spreads, upright and reverse meaning for every single card in the Rider-Waite, meanings to animals, colour symbolism from clouds, sky, items of clothing the person in the card is wearing, meanings for calm or choppy waters, trees, hills or mountains, expressions… This information helps the reader to understand the cards on a much deeper level, and understand their role for different outcomes or situations to the spread.
Holistic Tarot by Benebell Wen
This book was recommended to me. There seems to be issues with the Kindle version, however the paperback version has amazing reviews. I’ve heard about this book A LOT prior and learnt the author’s tone is focused on getting a person up to speed on tarot reading, rather than the more ethereal view of tarot. This book also covers the history of tarot, plenty of diagrams, symbolism, card meanings, and spreads. I recommend this book, but only in paper version – not kindle, because it subject matter requires you to skipping backwards and forwards.
